Barista FIRE: capital pays half, part-time work the rest

Barista FIRE means leaving your main job ahead of time: capital covers part of your expenses and easy part-time work covers the rest.

The gist in a minute

What it is

The name comes from the idea of working as a barista for a small income and insurance. In practice any work that does not drain you fits: part-time, freelance, seasonal projects. The capital is not overdrawn, and you live more freely right now.

In numbers

Expenses are $2,000 a month. Part-time work brings $1,000, so the capital must provide the other thousand: $12,000 a year × 25 = $300,000. That is half the full target — and getting there usually takes far less than half the time, because the second half of the capital grows slowest.
