Hardware wallet: when you need one and how to use it

While your coins sit on an exchange, the exchange controls them. A hardware wallet is a way to store them so that only you can dispose of them.

The gist in a minute

What it is

A hardware wallet is a small device the size of a flash drive. The keys to your coins are stored inside it and never leave it. To send coins you confirm the transfer with a button on the device itself.

That is why a virus on your computer or a fake website cannot steal the coins: without the physical device and your button press, no transfer happens.

When you need one

If you hold little and use it actively, an exchange with good account protection is enough. A wallet costs money and adds responsibility.

How to choose and buy

Setup, step by step

  1. Check the packaging: it must be intact. The device must arrive without a ready-made seed phrase. A card with words already written in the box means fraud.
  2. Install the software only from the manufacturer's website and update the firmware.
  3. Set a PIN: it protects the device if it is stolen.
  4. The device will show the seed phrase — 12 or 24 words. Write it down by hand on paper, in order, and check it.
  5. Make a second copy and put both in different safe places.
  6. Send a small amount to the wallet, then wipe the device and restore it from the seed phrase. That proves your record is correct while little is at stake.
The seed phrase matters more than the deviceA device can be lost or broken — the coins are restored on a new one from the seed phrase. If the phrase is lost and the device is broken, the coins are gone for good.
